“But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” Hebrews 5:14
What do you think are the most distinguishing characteristics of a mature Christian?
One characteristic certainly has to be the ability to discern truth and error, good and evil, and it’s highlighted in today’s passage. Discernment is not just for those with a special spiritual gift; it's a skill you can cultivate through consistent engagement with God's Word. Unfortunately, many believers allow worldly wisdom to shape their thinking which leads them to accept lies as truth.
Paul addresses this in Romans: exchanging God's truth for lies (Romans 1:22-25), abusing God's grace as a license to sin (Romans 6:1-2), and being conformed to the world's mold (Romans 12:2).
To avoid these pitfalls, you have to immerse yourself in Scripture. The Word of God becomes your tool for discernment, which helps you navigate the the culture. As you grow in spiritual maturity, you become better equipped to recognize and resist false teachings, even when they come from seemingly authoritative sources.
So today, commit to training your spiritual acuteness. By consistently studying and applying God's Word, you can develop the discernment needed to grow up spiritually. Remember, even if discernment doesn't come naturally to you, it can be cultivated through diligent practice.
Ask God to help you deepen your engagement with his word as you look to apply discernment to your circumstances.
