Know The Truth & Stand Firm In It

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
2 Timothy 2:15

I recently read a story about an elderly lighthouse keeper named Samuel. After maintaining the lighthouse in his coastal town for decades, a group of visitors was captivated by the lighthouse but couldn’t understand why Samuel was so meticulous in its maintenance when newer technologies could modernize the process for him. The group even suggested that from time to time, maybe the light could even be dimmed to save energy. Although he politely listened to their suggestions, Samuel firmly declined. His reasoning? “If I compromise this light even for a moment, sailors could run their ships aground. The lives of the sailors depend on the unwavering consistency of our lighthouse.”

The same is true of our unwavering commitment to God’s word. In an unstable culture, God requires us to be firmly rooted in scripture and Paul encourages men take the lead in this exercise. Consider a couple tough questions:

1) When was the last time you examined your foundation in God’s word?

2) Have you ever thought about how you can stand firm and defend something you don’t really know much about?

3) Is it possible you know more about your hobbies or what happened with your team this week, but couldn’t share what God’s saying to you through His word if someone asked you?

In order to defend the truth, you have to know the truth.

Tomorrow, we’ll talk about a few ways you can grow in this area. But for now, why not ask God for the commitment to deepening your understanding of scripture so that you can distinguish truth from error?
