“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13
In the late medieval period, many European cities employed an unusual practice of stationing musicians at the city gates. This custom saw musicians taking on roles that combined artistic and security responsibilities as these individuals, skilled in playing instruments, were tasked with defending city entrances and patrolling streets at night. The rationale was practical: musicians' ability to sound loud alarms and signal across long distances made them ideal first responders in case of disturbances or threats. Their instruments served as an effective early warning system for all citizens. In some regions, these musical guardians were even expected to be proficient swordsmen!
While the concept may seem strange today, it represents a fascinating aspect of medieval urban security, highlighting the versatile roles musicians played in maintaining public safety and order. In the same way, men of God today are expected to stay alert and awake at the posts God has given them.
Ezekiel 33 tells us that men are to be watchmen on the walls. Do you understand that you’re called to this kind of watchman, not just an observer?
Watchmen warn, protect, and stand in their place. They pray for their families, for the work of God in their communities, and they defend truth in their cultures. Perhaps you’ve become spiritually drowsy.
Ask yourself a few questions to help you get back on the wall as a watchman.
1) Are you truly aware of the spiritual threats around you or have you become inattentive?
2) How are you currently serving as a watchman in your family and community? If not, why not?
3) When was the last time you felt spiritually alert and engaged? What were you doing at that time?
Now, ask the Lord to give you fresh passion for being the watchman he expects you to be.
